Biography

Birth: Chester W Ford was born about 3 May 1883 in the Bauneg Beg section of North Berwick, Maine. He was the son of Albion Ford and Mary A (Johnson) Ford both born in North Berwick and, at least his mother, was also born in Bauneg Beg. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]

Siblings: [3]

Parents' Divorce: When Chester was 5-years-old, his mother was granted a divorce from his father. Finalized on 25 May 1888, the court found the following allegations of Mary against Albion "satisfactorily proved:" habitual drunkenness and giving liquor to their children; using "obscene, threatening and profane language" to Mary and in the hearing of their children; abusing and threatening to harm Mary. She stated Albion owned real estate and personal property in North Berwick; and as the divorce was his fault, "that she may have dower in his real estate and that the court will decree her a reasonable alimony out of the estate" . . . "and that the custody and education of her three children" be decreed to her. [6]

Death of Father: Albion Ford passed away on 10 Mar 1896 in North Berwick. Albion married Ella Staples on the day he died. Chester was 13 years old. [7] [8]

1900 US Census, Sanford, Maine: Chester, age 17, is working as machinist and living with his mother who is a dressmaker. Chester's 20-year-old brother Roscoe lives with them and is working as a laborer. There is a 24-year-old single woman, Mary Clark, living with them and working as a sales woman. Chester's sister, Daisy, married in 1895 and is living with her husband and son in another area of Sanford. [3]

Chester's mother purchased this located at the corner of Main and Pleasant and owns it without a mortgage. Except for a few years, this will be Chester's primary residence for the rest of his life. He and his brother will eventually run their business at this location. A map showing their home can be seen here in an 1889 Bird's-eye-view, looking east, on the corner of Main and Pleasant Streets. [9] [10] [11] [2] [12]

1st Marriage: Chester W Ford, age 23, married Ella M Baker on 24 Dec 1906 in Sanford, Maine. Rev. J B Ranger, clergyman, solemnized the marriage. This was the first marriage for them both. Chester was working as a machinist and living in Sanford. Ella was the 18-year-old daughter of George W and Delima[Delia] (Wheller/Wheeler) Baker. Ella is working as a mender and living in Springvale which is a village within Sanford. Ella's father is deceased. Her mother was born in New York, but is currently living in Lebanon, Maine and working as a housekeeper which is the occupation listed for Chester's mother as well. It's not clear if their mothers are for working for others outside their own homes. [1]
Divorce: Ella M Ford was granted a divorce from Chester on 20 May 1915 - cause intoxication. [13]

They are both living in Sanford, Maine. Chester, age 37, is working as a machinist. Lillian is a 27-year-old laundress born in Dorchester, Massachusetts. She's the daughter of George Boothby and Elizabeth Churchill. Lillian's father is a policeman who was born in Waterboro, Maine; her mother does housework and was born in Melrose, Massachusetts. Both Lillian's parents are residing in Sanford. [4]

Per an article in the 14 Jan 1921 edition of the "Springvale Advocate," on 9 Jan, just four days after his wedding, Chester Ford of Ridgeway Park, attempted suicide after an attack of influenza had left him despondent. He was in serious condition, but not a fatal one. No mention of his recent marriage is made. [18]

In Apr of 1922: Chester and his wife have moved from Ridgeway, back to his mother's house. [19]

Chester owned and auto repair shop with his brother.

Ford Bros: Chester and his brother Roscoe own an a auto repair shop.

-7 Aug 1923, Chester's mother deeds a portion of her "homestead lot" on the easterly side of Main Street to Chester and his brother. [20]
-September 1924, "Chester Ford is erecting a public garage at Main and Pleasant Streets.“ By April 1925 a local dealer of Maxwell and Chrysler automobiles is building modern service and sales building on adjoining lot which will conducting be business under the firm name of Ford Bros. A photo of the brother's new service station can be seen here: Media. [21] [22] [23] [24]

At night, Chester taught an industrial arts class at Sanford High School. For at least 2 years he was the instructor for auto ignition and repair. The course was was made more practical in 1925 as garage doors had been arranged at the school so that "cars will be run in to allow actual work on them." [25]

Chester was a Firefighter along with his brother.

He was recommended as Assistant Engineer for the Sanford Fire Department in Mar 1926, another cause Chester and Roscoe shared. [26]

He was 44 years old and came to Sanford from North Berwick 39 years ago . . . he was associated with his brother in conducting Ford Bros. garage, Maine st. Abstract of Will: as pertains to real estate, is recorded in the York County, Maine Registry of Deeds as received from the probate office on 11 Jan 1928. It leaves real estate to his wife Lillian G Ford with the provision she supports and maintains his mother until the end of her life. The newspaper report of probate matters indicates Chester's estate estimated at $4,000. [29] [30]

Chester's widow Lillian G Ford sold to Chester's brother Roscoe at least two pieces of property she'd received via decent:

-21 Dec 1928, 25 acres which Chester had acquired shortly before his death on 13 Jun 1927 from Frank O Allen near "so called" brook bridge and "branch brook." The transfer to Chester was not recorded until 16 Nov 1927 which was 24 - 48 hours after his death. [31] [32]
-25 Sep 1931 ,her share of the land of which was a portion of Mary A Ford's "homestead" on the east side of Main Street. Being the same lot which their mother had sold to both Chester and Roscoe on 7 Aug 1923. [33] [20]

Research Notes

  • Birth record is required. Information above taken from his 1st Marriage Record, his draft registration, and Find a Grave. [2] [1]
  • Death record is required. Information above is taken from a newspaper account which reports his death one day off from the date on Find a Grave. Find a Grave lists no source other than a photograph the same newspaper account. His memorial stone indicates the year of his death only. [27] [28]
  • By 1920, Chester's 1st wife had married Edward C Ricker. Chester's sons are living with Ella, her new husband, and Ella's mother. The sons are the correct age to be Chester's sons, their first names agree with those names listed in Chester's obituary. Both boys have the last name of Ford on their birth records. It appears Cecil's first name and middle initial were added to his birth record in 1958. Both sons are listed under the Surname Ricker on the 1920 census. (No sources have been found that indicate Edward Ricker had any children prior to his marriage to Ella or ever had biological children with these names.) [14] [16] [34] [27]
  • A copy of Chester and Ella's complete divorce record may add clarity. Sources are required to confirm whether Chester Ford's sons were legally adopted by Edward Ricker, otherwise legally changed their names, used the surname Ricker out of convenience, or there is a misinterpretation of facts. Their Find a Grave pages include transcriptions of their obituaries. The dates and birth places agree with the sons born to Chester Ford and Ella. However, their parents are listed as Edward and Ella (Baker) Ricker. Gerard's page has photograph of his memorial stone engraved "Gerard C Ricker." They are buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Alfred, Maine as are Ella (Baker) (Ford) and Edward Ricker. [35] [36]
  • Full copy of Last Testament and Will required. It may contain information concerning his sons. The portion recorded in registry of deeds deals only with real estate and does not mention children. The newspaper's report of probate matters mentions only his widow. [29] [30]
  • See first wife Ella May Baker's profile, "Research Notes," concerning her birth place.
  • York County Registry of Deeds in Alfred Maine has other real estate transaction that reference Chester W Ford.
