Thomas Ford migrated from Cornwall, England to Victoria, Australia c.1854.
Thomas Ford was a miner.
Thomas was the sixth of nine children of William Ford, a miner, and Jenny Teague, born about 1820 at Beer Alston, Devon, and baptised on 11th June 1820 at Bere Ferrers.[1][2] The families of both of his parents were comprised of many miners.
By 1827 the family had returned to Redruth in Cornwall, as Thomas' youngest sibling, Mary was baptised in Gwennap. Possibly their return was prompted by the death of Thomas' mother, so that family could assist with caring for her children. Thomas' whereabouts in 1841 remains a mystery; he has not been enumerated in the census in Cornwall.
In 1844 Thomas married Patience Tresidder in Redruth.[3] The couple had five children:
The family lived at Redruth, where Thomas was a copper miner.[1]
By about 1854 Thomas emigrated alone to Victoria, Australia, probably lured by the gold rush. He spent the last nine months of his life at Creswick, and spent most of that time destitute, as ill health prevented him from working. He died at Creswick on 23rd September 1858, due to haemoptysis, probably as a result of phthisis.[4][5][6]
Patience and the children emigrated to Victoria after Thomas' death.
