Birth: Jan. 14, 1926 Wytheville Wythe County Virginia, USA

Death: Sep. 15, 2015 Wytheville Wythe County Virginia, USA

Obituary: John Wade Fontaine, age 89 of Wytheville passed away Tuesday, September 15, 2015 at home.

Born on January 14, 1926 at home and delivered by Dr. C. F. Graham to Benjamin Wade Fontaine and Julia Gertrude Moore Fontaine, and preceded in death his wife of 38 years, Doris Sue Spence Fontaine,; Sister, Mary Moore Fontaine Yancey and Brother-in-Law, Layton William Yancey; Parents: Benjamin Wade Fontaine and Julia Gertrude Moore Fontaine.

Graduated from Wytheville High School in 1943. Attended King College, was a member of the Wytheville Presbyterian Church since February 1, 1937 and was ordained as an elder on January 4, 1964. He was the 1965 Men of the Church President, on the Board of Directors of Southern States, Wytheville Cooperative, a member of the Wythe Co. Farm Bureau, member of the Stuart B Campbell Sunday School Class where he was their scripture reader and a member of the Wytheville Ruritan Club. He loved to make a joyful noise and started singing at the church with the boys’ choir in 1936 and continued in the chancel choir until December 2013. He always had a song in his heart and was ready to share while playing the piano or harmonica; humming, whistling or singing.

He received his first journal for Christmas in 1939 and had continuously written ever since.

For much of his life, he enjoyed working the land at his farm on the Old Stage Rd. He raised cattle and hogs and spent many an hour mowing the fields to make hay. His garden and orchard contained acres of the best apples, pears, cantaloupe, black raspberries, green beans, corn on the cob and potatoes. Through hard work and dedication to family, he provided a rich example of what a father should be and an earthly example of our heavenly father’s love.

His caring for the community is demonstrated by 10+ galloons of blood that he had donated during his life. He rarely passed up a good dish of food or a sweet treat when offered. Many thanks to his caregivers Teresa Brunk, Wanda Hall and Debbie Yates who lovingly cared for him in the last years and in returned received fatherly advice. The family also appreciates the assistance of Hospice of Southwest Virginia and his case manager, Cindy.
