Biography

Silas Follett was born in Winchester, Hew Hampshire, either on Jan. 29, 1786 (date inscribed on his gravestone) or Jan. 31, 1786 (date used in transcribed database records, noted below in sources.) He was the son of John Follett (b. 1752) and Hannah Oakes or Oak.

Silas had children by two marriages. His first marriage was to Hannah May (1788-1813) and they had children born between 1809 and 1812: Fanny, Emily, Harriet and Sophronia. Hannah died in May 1813 at the age of 25.

Silas then married Nancy Curry (1796-1861) in July 1814. They had several children born between 1815 and 1838: William, James, Caroline, John, Betsy, Alexander, Lutheda, Permelia and Nancy Mary.

The 1860 census notes he was a farmer, but also that he was “Insane and Blind” - he may have had dementia by age 74.

Silas Follett passed away in October 1863 at the age of 77.

A 14 page file regarding the administration of his estate shows a sometimes humorous dispute between brothers John and William as to who should be appointed administrator of the estate of Silas, and contains testimony from relatives.

Burial: Hayts Cemetery, Ithaca, Tompkins County, New York, USA.
