Mary Flug, daughter of Harry and Fannie (Szuch) Flug was born about 1914 in New York. She appeared in the 1915 New York Census with her parents in Kings County, New York.[1]

She graduated from Brooklyn College in 1933 and received a Master of Arts degree at Columbia in 1934. She became an investigator for the United States Railroad Retirement Board.[2]

She married Oscar Handlin on Sep. 18, 1937 in Manhattan County, New York.[3]

After her marriage she studied at the London School of Economics.[2]

In 1940, Oscar and Mary, were living at Cambridge. Oscar is described as an instructor at Harvard College and Mary is a government employee in the labor department.[4]

In 1942 she was named research historian of the Social Science Research Council.

With her husband she was co-author of Commonwealth: A Study of the Role of Gorvenment in American Economy in 1947. She and her husband went on to write a number of additional books.

They had three children, David P., Joanna F. and Ruth E.

Mary died May 24, 1976 at the Harvard University infirmary.[2]
