Wilhelm was born around 1783-1786 in Gnieshen/Gniesen Prussian Poland to Anna Elizabeth Beg and her husband, Unknown Flegel.[1]
It is estimated that he married his wife, Anna Dorothea (Reschke) Ruzke about 1807 in Poland, as their eldest daughter, Anna Rosine Flegel, was born on 22 August 1808 in Poland. The births of their children suggest that they arrived in Kulm, Bessarabia between 1814 and 1817. [2]

According to Arthur Flegel's research, Wilhelm was murdered by highwaymen, while travelling home with his son after a hog selling trip to Tarutino Market on September 13, 1839.[4]
