Biography

John Flaugher was born on January 25, 1827 to Jacob B. Flaugher and Sarah Cole near Waynesboro, Franklin, Pennsylvania.

His parents brought him to Seneca County, Ohio in 1837 where his father became the first mayor of Fort Ball, later part of Tiffin, Ohio.

John was married to Mary R. Johnson in Drummondville, Quebec. They were the parents of five children: John (died in infancy), Clara Flaugher Parker, Myra Flaugher Simonds, Charles K. Flaugher who died in a railroad accident at the age of twenty, and Oliver Elisha Flaugher.

John apprenticed to a printer at an early age and became editor of the Seneca Advertiser in 1845.

In 1847, he moved to Fremont, Ohio and became the publisher and editor of the Sandusky County Democrat. The slavery question caused Flaugher to lose patronage, and later, to suspend publication.[1]

John Flaugher went on to edit and publish the Democratic Sentinel through the war years. Although publication dates are unknown, it is believed that Flaugher edited the paper from 1862 to 1864 when Isaac Keeler purchased it and successfully merged the paper with the Fremont Journal.

John Flaugher was a member of the Fremont Board of Education from 1854 to 1864.

In 1873, John moved to Toledo where he became a proof reader for the Toledo Blade.

He later owned and edited the American Farm Journal.

In 1877, John Flaugher purchased the Independent Register of Columbiana, Ohio which he edited until his death in 1896. Both John and his wife were interred in Fremont's Oakwood Cemetery.

Footnotes

  1. History of Sandusky County, Ohio, pg. 234 Mr. Davis continued to publish the paper until some time in the year 1864, when he sold it to Charles J. Orton, who, for a time, had sole charge of it, after which Esward F. Dickinson bought an interest in the paper and it was published a while by the firm of Orton & Dickinson, who transferred it to John Flaugher. Mr. Flaugher was a high-minded, honorable man, and a true Democrat, but his views on slavery and the war of the Rebellion were not satisfactory to the anti-war and pro-slavery portion of the Democratic party, who gave it a rather poor support, and the paper lost patronage and influence. In fact, as early as 1856, during the great discussion over the extension of slavery, the leaders of the extreme pro-slavery portion of the Democrats of the county started another paper, which drew off a large part of the patronage formerly enjoyed by the Sandusky County Democrat, and it had a hard struggle for life until sometime in the spring of 1856, Mr. FLaugher sold the press and materials of the Democrat to Isaac M. Keeler, and the publication of the paper caused the radical pro-slavery Democrats of the county, who were dissatisfied with the principles advocated by the Democrat, to combine and bring about the establishment, in 1856, of the Democratic Messenger.
