Born in Oxford, PA, to Pauline Conline Fisher and George Albert Fisher, Orpheus Hodge Fisher soon moved with his father to Wilmington, DE. George Albert Fisher taught at Lincoln University and sent Orpheus H. Fisher first to Friends Central School in Philadelphia and then to Wilmington High School. By the 1920s Fisher was already employed in Philadelphia, working for Zantzinger, Borie & Medary. By February 1928 he was in the office of Heacock & Hokanson, but the Great Depression sent Fisher to New York City, by way of Nova Scotia, Canada and Camden, NJ, where by 1930 he was working for the RCA Victor Company.
Finally arriving in New York, Fisher associated with the United Engineers & Construction Company. Other positions followed in New York, but by 1934 he was working with the 1939 New York World's Fair Corporation. During this time he rekindled his relationship with singer Marian Anderson, whom he had actually met in high school. She became his second wife, and there followed several architectural projects, including homes in Danbury, CT, and Philadelphia.
