Biography

Birth & Upbringing: John was born in 1888 (see research notes). ^[1] He is the son of George Field and Agnes Furner and was raised in the Canterbury area in North Lane. ^{[2] [3]}
Family: John Married May Oliver on 22 Sep 1917 at Canterbury, Kent. ^[4] The couple appear to have settled in Epsom, Surrey where they had two sons, Jack (who died as an infant) and Gordon. He was widowed in May 1928. John re-married in November 1928 to Ethel Keen. ^[5] There were no children from the second marriage.
Military Service: Apparently served in the 1st Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers on the North West Frontier of India (in what is now known as Pakistan). He served in France as a Reserve during World War I.
Occupation: After the Great War, Jack, as he was commonly known, took up the a career in the Royal Mail initially as a postman. ^[6]
Known Residences: Canterbury, Kent; ^{[7] [8]} West Ridge, Rawalpindi, India; ^[9] Banstead, Surrey. ^[10]
Demise: He passed away in 1962.

Research Notes

• There is some discrepancy on birth dates between the date of registration of the birth and the 1939 Register, a matter of two years. Even the marriage certificate to first wife is inconsistent with either date, falling in between. The two Census of 1891 and 1901 suggest 1889. The earlier date, 1886, conflicts with the birth of a sibling, Frederick b. 18 May 1886.
• At marriage to 2nd wife at St Marks, St Johns Wood 3 Nov 1928, Westminster his age is recorded as 40 (widower , postman Violet Hill Abercorn Hill, NW8 Father George William, Baker retired) - London Metropolitan Archives p89 MRK/2 St Marks marriage reg. Image on ancestry.^[11]
• From info on Profile this seems to be him confirms he was in India 1911 census (military return RG 14 34987 p 7 enumeration district India )age 23, single private 1st Batt Northumberland Fusiliers b Westgate Kent supports 1888 birth prior to beg of April and registered in.the 2nd q (census date 2 April) ^[12]
