Biography

Duncan Ferguson migrated from Scotland to the United States.

Duncan served as Mayor of Rockford, Illinois 1877-1878

Duncan Ferguson is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Rockford, Illinois.

Duncan was born in 1809 in Glasgow, Scotland. He studied mathematical engineering at the University of Glasgow.

He went to Ireland as a surveyor to work on the Trigonometrical Survey of Great Britain.

In 1829 he married Mary Agnes Hope in Ireland. ^[1]

They immigrated to the United States in 1837. They first went to Erie, Pennsylvania. In 1839 he was employed to survey the newly formed counties of Ogle, Lee, DeKalb and Whiteside.

They settled in Rockford, Illinois. ^{[2] [3] [4]}

Agnes died in 1862. In 1867 he married Mary Washborn, the widow of Horatio Spelman. ^[5][6]

He was mayor of Rockford from 1877-1878. ^[7]

In 1880 he lived with his stepson Horatio Spelman. ^[8]

Duncan passed away in 1882. ^[9]
