Biography

John W. Fears was born 18 June 1806 in Jasper County, Georgia to parents Ezekiel Fears and Alcey Stringfellow.

John W Fears married Joanna Pye 9 August 1829 in Jasper County, Georgia.^[1] They had four daughters and one son during their ten year marriage. Their son, John, died in infancy. Joanna died in 1839 after which their four daughters lived with John's parents, Ezekiel and Alcey Stringfellow. John remarried to Ann Wood in 1841 and they also had four daughters and one son. John and Ann moved first to Alabama where some of their children were born and then to Scott County, Mississippi where they resided in 1860. ^[2]

John died before 2 August 1869 possibly in Magnolia, Columbia County, Arkansas. He may have been there searching for land to move his second wife and family. His will and probate record are in Scott County, Mississippi. Most references say he died 9 August 1869 ; however, the court records filed in Scott County, MIssissippi, first began on 2 August 1869 saying that he is deceased. ^[3]No grave site has been found for John; however, there is an inscription for him on the tombstone of his first wife, Joanna Pye Fears in the Fears Cemetery, Monticello, Jasper County, Georgia.^[4]
