Biography

1776 Project
Private Joseph Fay served with Capt. Samuel Robinson's Company, Vermont Republic Militia during the American Revolution.

20 July 1781 Joseph Fay was Vermont's new commissioner of prisoners. He had fought in the battle of Bennington. His father Stephen Fay was landlord of Catamount Tavern. His brother Jonas Fay was a surgeon in Seth Warner's Regiment on the retreat from Quebec. [1]

Note NI422His first wife was Margaret Dewey, daughter of Rev. Jedediah Dewey, who was the first settled minister in Bennington.
Col. Fay came to Bennington with his father in 1766. He was secretary of the "Council of Safety" from Sept 1777 to 1778 and the State Council from Sept 1778 to 1794. He was Secretary of State from the resignation of Thomas Chandler. (Supposed to be in Nov 1778) to 1781. Rev L R Paige in his History of Hardwidk says "Joseph was first Secretary of State".
He was the associate of Ira Allen in conducting the famous negotiation with Gen. Frederick Haldimand (Gov. General of Canada) by which the operations of the enemy were paralyzed and the Northern frontier protected from invasion during the last three years of the Revolutionary War.
He was a man of very respectable talents and acquirements, agreeable manners and address, well calculated to manage such a diplomatic adventure with adroitness and ability.
He built the house, occupied in 1859 by Truman Squier, next north of the Court House. In 1794 he moved to New York City as a merchant where he was successful and maintained one of the most hospitable establishments in that city.
