Biography

William was the son of John Faunt[1][2] and Alice Clervaux.[3][4] His birth date is not known, and has been guesstimated based on the probable birth date (1496) of his second son William. His father had property in Huntingdonshire, but practised as a lawyer in London, and William's birthplace is also unknown.

According to Douglas Richardson, who appears to base this on Nichols' History and Antiquities of the County of Leicester,[2] William married Isabel Sayer, daughter of John Sayer.[3][4] The Harleian Society edition of the 1619 Leicestershire Visitation says that William's wife was a daughter of someone with the last name Scot.[1] The name of his wife should be regarded as uncertain until firmer evidence can be found.

William's marriage date is not known, but given that their second son was probably born in about 1496, its was likely to have been before 1495. They had at least three children:

William is said to have worked for Lord Poynings,[1][2][3][4] but it is doubtful if there was a Lord Poynings in his lifetime: the Poynings barony went into abeyance in 1429, and [[Poynings-68|Thomas Poynings (d. 1545) was not raised to the peerage as 1st Baron Poynings of Poynings, Sussex until 1544/5.[5]

William's death date is not known. He was buried at Wistow, Huntingdonshire[1][2] (now in Cambridgeshire), where he held property, and that may be where he died.[3][4]

Magna Carta Project

This profile was re-reviewed for the Magna Carta Project by Michael Cayley on 25 January 2023.
William Faunt appears in Magna Carta Ancestry in a Richardson-documented trail from Gateway Ancestor Henry Corbin to Magna Carta Surety Barons Hugh le Bigod and Roger le Bigod (vol. I, pages 533-535 CORBIN). This profile was originally badged by the Magna Carta Project in 2015 as part of a trail to Surety Baron Robert de Ros and was later connected to project-approved trails to the Bigods, Gilbert de Clare, Richard de Clare, John de Lacy, and Saher de Quincy. The trails are set out in the Magna Carta Trails section on the Gateway's profile.
See Base Camp for more information about identified Magna Carta trails and their status. See the project's glossary for project-specific terms, such as a "badged trail".

Verified this profile as being on a project-approved trail (from Corbin-100 to Ros-162, following "Magna Carta badged" profiles to that surety baron). The project account for the Magna Carta Project will be added as a manager later this month to meet WikiTree guidelines (see Help:Project-Managed_Profiles).
