Biography

George was born 23 Dec 1839, in Platte County, Missouri. He was the fourth of eleven children born to Thomas and Mary (Savage) Farmer.

In about 1843, when George was about four years old, the family moved to Fremont County, Iowa. In 1850, he was an eleven-year-old boy, residing with his parents and ten siblings, on their farm in Fremont County.[1] [2]

In 1863, at the age of 23, George registered for the Civil War draft. At the time, he was residing in Sydney Township, Fremont County, Iowa, where he was a saddler.[3]

George married Elizabeth Chandler and had a daughter, Mary, who died 13 Apr 1866. [It is commonly stated that Mary died at age three, perhaps during a flu epidemic; this would place her date of birth as 1862 or 1863. It is also frequently claimed that George and Elizabeth were married 6 Mar 1864, in Atchison County, Missouri - well after Mary's suggested birth date. This later claim is suspect, however, as neither was from Missouri.]

George and Elizabeth had a second daughter, Katherine, whose specific date of birth is also unknown. Elizabeth died 23 Sep 1868, and it has been commonly asserted that she died giving birth to Katherine. However, there does not seem to be any direct evidence to support this claim, and there is actually evidence to suggest that Katherine was born as much as a year or more before her mother's death.

On November 9, 1870, George was appointed to be the Postmaster of Hamburg, Fremont County, Iowa. Shortly thereafter, on 10 .Jan 1871, he married Lydia Jane Burnett and had two more daughters, Eva and Maggie. When the girls were still very young, the family moved to Mason County in Central Texas.

George died 7 Mar 1876, at Brady, McCulloch, Texas. He was just 38 years old.
