James was born in 1832. He was the son of James Farmer and Mary Fitzgerald. James served as a private in the Union Army in Company H of the 6th Kentucky Cavalry. After the war, James married his cousin Margaret Jane Farmer on 25 Apr 1866. She was the daughter of James' uncle, Joseph Farmer and Lucy Penn. James and Margaret farmed and had five children. He passed away in 1920 from "a combination of diseases and old age". He was 88 years old. His grave can be found in the New Market Cemetery in New Market, KY, where several of his family members are also buried.
