Biography

Julius (Janos) Farkas was born on January 10, 1892 in NagyBereg, Hungary,[1] third son of Moritz Farkas and Leni Kunstler Farkas [source: WWI draft registration]. When his parents left for New York City at the turn of the 20th century, Julius and his seven siblings were left in the care of their maternal grandparents in Hungary. Once the parents were settled, they sent for their children. Julius was 11 years old in April, 1903 when he sailed to America[2] and passed through Ellis Island to be reunited with his parents [passenger manifest, SS Konigin Luise].

As a teenager and into his early 20s, Julius helped support the family by working as a clerk.[2] By the time of the World War I draft in 1917, he was working as a “Panama Hatter,” making the popular straw hats for a company in Greenwich Village [WWI draft registration].[3] Despite seeking exemption from military service due to “conscientious objection,” he was inducted into the U.S. Army on February 25, 1918 [abstracts of WWI US military service].

Julius trained with Battery D, 305th Forward Artillery until April, 1918. Then he was transferred to the 152d Depot Brigade, where he was a cook. He was honorably discharged on August 14, 1919 and became a grocery salesman for several years. During the 1930s, Julius went into business with his younger brother Peter Farkas (1894-1961), operating a small dairy store in New York City. They brought “stinky cheeses” to family gatherings in the 1930s and 1940s.

Both Julius and Peter Farkas were lifelong bachelors, known to be devoted to each other and to their siblings. They lived with their younger sister Irene for more than 25 years [WWII draft registration, US Census records, family history].[4][5] Julius died in New York City on May 4, 1969, at the age of 77 [NYC death cert #2162].[6] He was buried alongside his brother Peter at Mount Hebron Cemetery in Queens, New York [Block 62, Ref. 1, sec. A-D, grave 2].[1] According to his gravestone, his Hebrew name was Yitzchak, son of Moshe.
