Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Jeremiah Exum was a Virginia colonist.

Jeremiah Exum[1][2][3] is believed to have been born between 1654 and 1655 to Richard Exum and Elizabeth Atkinson, who married 8 Dec. 1653 in Boston, Massachusetts Bay Colony[4].

Although his parents appear to have married in Boston, Jeremiah may have been born in Old Rappahannock County (later Essex), Virginia, where his father's plantation was located. Jeremiah and his brother Thomas probably left Old Rappahannock for Nansemond and Isle of Wight Counties around 1670. (Strutton-11 17:41, 30 January 2023 (UTC))

Jeremiah and Ann were Quakers, and appear frequently in the records of the Society of Friends[5]. Jeremiah married Ann Lawrence in 1678, in the town of his birth. They had the following children:

  1. Captain Richard Exum died unmarried
  2. Mary Exum married 1st Jacob Ricks,[6] married 2nd Barnaby McKinne[7]
  3. Ann Exum married George Green and died before her parents. She had no children
  4. Elizabeth Exum died unmarried
  5. Jane Exum married Richard Outland
  6. Mourning Exum married William Scott
  7. Christian Exum married George Norsworthy
  8. Sarah Exum married her cousin, Robert Lawrence, Jr.

The Two known sons of Richard were Jeremiah and Thomas as proved by a deed referenced in a law suit, recorded May 8, 1685, by Jeremiah and Thomas Exum, sons of Richard Exum, to a Mrs. Gouldman of the land inherited from their father [12].

The signature of Jeremiah Exum also appears attached as a Witness to the Will of Michael MackQuinney (McKinne), dated April 15, 1686[13][14].

He was recorded as an Associate Judge of the Court of Isle of Wight in 1693 and 1694 [15].

Jeremiah and his wife, Ann, are listed with members of the Lawrence family in a deed "to sell Black Rock, containing 300 acres formerly possesst by Jon Lawrence, 22nd day of --, 1704," suggesting that Ann was likely the daughter of John Lawrence [16].

Jeremiah Exum's Will

Judge Jeremiah Exum made his Will Sept. 3, 1712, and died before his Will was proven on 28 March, 1720. In it he mentions "Daughters Elizabeth, Christian, gr. dau. Catharine Scott, cozin Jane Exum, daus. Mourning, Sarah, Mary and Jane Exum." [17]. His wife, Ann Lawrence Exum, made her Will on Feb.23, 1726/27, which was recorded March 27, 1727. [18]. Others mentioned in Will of Ann Lawrence Exum were granddaughters Katoren Godwin and Ann Murphy; and grandson Jeremiah Lawrence. [19]

Jeremiah passed away in 1720.

His wife's findagrave page has the correct spelling "Exum". Has a bio. and info about Jeremiah.

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/197411663/ann-exum#add-to-vc There is also a duplicate record/merge request from May pending with the name spelled "Exum"

Exume-3 and Exum-2 appear to represent the same person because: Exum is the correct last name. Clear duplicate.

He has a duplicate record but name is spelled Exume. Not sure which order to suggest the merge since it's spelled wrong? https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Exume-3
Hello cousin(s),

Five things:

  • Please correct the erroneous description of parents' marriage location in 1650: Boston was within the Massachusetts Bay Colony, not "Boston Colony."
  • Please include the mentioned "Essex Land Trials, 1711-1716, pp. 44, 48" in Sources section of bio, and add in-line citation.
  • Please remove blockquote of FindAGrave profile. If we give tertiary user-generated web context as sources, we'll just go round-and-round in circles.
  • Please include the mentioned Boddie in Sources section, and add in-line citation
  • Please source the quote from the original Will.

The first sentence of this profile bio names this man's notional mother Atkinson and links to her non-connected profile. (There is a NN mother currently connected.) Visiting the Atkinson profile, it says that she was NOT the mother of her husband's children.

We should correct the self-contradictory claims on the profiles in this family group.

I see the conflict, but I don't know which is in error since there is no reference in the Elizabeth Atkinson profile to the claim that she was only step-mother to the children. What I found seems to indicate that Richard Exum and Elizabeth Atkinson were married in 1653 and Jeremiah born 1654 or 1655, but I'm not sure of the sourcing on that either. Let's see what the other managers have. My Ancestry membership has lapsed, so I no longer have access to many of the research tools I once had.

Do we have any actual sources for this person?

No. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I believe this profile must have been automatically generated when I imported my family tree from Ancestry.com several years ago. I do not even show it in my Ancestry tree at this time, and I see no evidence concerning the parentage of Richard Exum. In addition, the similarity of the name to Jeremiah Exum who was married to Ann Lawrence makes me further doubt it's accuracy. I believe this profile should be deleted -- do you have a suggestion as to the best way to accomplish that?
posted on Exum-27 (merged) by Allen McGrew
Okay -- I repaired this seeming error by merging Jeremy Exum with Jeremiah Exum and Ann Lawrence (Lawrence-3096) with Ann Lawrence (Lawrence-401). I also removed Jeremiah Exum as the father of Richard Exum as Jeremiah appears to have been the son rather than the father.

Does everyone agree if I clean up this profile's bio? I have received some real documents to add (wills and deeds with sources). Information from Donald Gradeless, PhD, Profile Manager who has bought volumes of books and who could probably help with this profile - starting from documents with sources. What do you think?

Yes, please. (3.5 years later!) :-)

Don't know how I missed this three years ago, but yes, please clean up the profile. I just took a whack at it, adding some new sources, but I think it still needs help. My Ancestry membership has lapsed, and I can no longer access many of the Quaker records. I inserted a generic reference to the Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, but I know we can do better than that.

Need help with Jeremiah Exum-1 a US Southern Colonist who needs PPP. Please stop adding to this profile while it gets straightened out. No one has added documents to this profile and Ancestry, com shows no real documents.
