Richardson presents Sibyl de Ewyas as daughter and co-heiress of Robert de Ewyas, of Ewyas Harold, Herefordshire, Lydiard Tregoze, Wiltshire, etc. by his wife Pernel.[3] Cawley shows her as the daughter of Robert de Ewias II and his wife Petronilla. [4] Her father's estimated date of birth is 1140, and death, 1198.
Birth Year Estimation
Sibyl's calculated marriage year is 1189; assume she was at least 16, which gives an estimated birth year of 1673.
Complete Peerage states that Sibyll, daughter and heiress of Robert de Ewyas, lord of Harold Ewyas, Herefordshire by Pernel (Petronilla) his wife, married Robert de Tregoz. [5]
Salzman states that Sibyl was married in the time of Richard I. Richard I (who reigned 1189-1199) bestowed on Robert the hand of Sibyl, daughter and heir of Robert d'Ewyas, by which marriage he acquired 19 knights' fees in Herefordshire and elsewhere in the western counties. [6]
Salzman notes that there is no indication her oldest son Robert was a minor when her husband Robert died in 1214. Therefore Robert was born at least 21 years before 1214, or 1193. Salzman estimates the marriage to have occurred about 1190,[7] however, 1190 is the estimated year of birth for Sibyl's first child, therefore the marriage estimate has been advanced to 1189.
Weis[8] and Boyer suggest the marriage occurred in 1198, Boyer adding it could have occrred as early as 1184 [9]
Nichols, writing in 1853, identified Robert de Tregoz as the second son of William Tregoz, and the founder of the family's most important branch. [2] Richardson also identifies Robert as the son of William de Tregoz. [3] On the otherhand, Salzman does not find documentation for an ancestry of Robert de Tregoz.[10]
Nichols observes that Robert de Tregoz acquired vast wealth from this marriage, including the castle of Ewyas Harold in Herefordshire,[2] Richardson adds that In right of his wife, Robert de Tregoz was also of Shiptae, Bellinger, Hampshire, Ewyas Haqrold, Herfordshire, and Lydiard Tregoz, Wiltshire. [3]
Robert had a suit in 9th Richard I, (Easter Term) (about 1198) with Hermenus de Braton for the advowson of Braton church in Norfolk, part of Sibilla's vast inheritance.
Challenge to Marriage
Salzman reports that the marriage was unsuccessfully challenged by William de Novo Mereato, who claimed that he himself had married Sibyl with her father's consent.[6]
Though duly married, a strange contest arose in the 11th John (1210) regarding her; when, in Easter Term, William de Newmarket was summoned to show by what right he claimed her as wife when she was Robert Tregoz's wife. It appeared that Richard I had given her to Tregoz in marriage. Newmarket claimed he had married her in the time of Richard the First by gift of Robert de Ewyas her father. Tregoz had sufficient power to retain the heiress.
Sibiyl witnessed her father's donation of tithes to the Ewias Priory by an undated charter, also witnessed by his wife Petronilla and his brothers, William and Herbert.[4]
"Robertus de Ewyas filius Roberti de Ewyas" confirmed the donations of "ecclesiam Sancti Michaelis et Sancti Jacobi de Ewyas…" to Gloucester St Peter, for the souls of himself and "uxoris meæ Petronillæ et filiæ meæ Sibillæ", by charter dated 23 Feb 1196 [11].
"Domina Sibilla de Ewyas filia Roberti de Ewyas" donated her mill at Ethon to Acornbury priory, Herefordshire by undated charter, witnessed by “domino Waltero de Lacy, domino Rogero de Clifford, Willielmo de Ewias…Roberto Tregoz et fratribus suis"[12].
Sibyll is named in a 1204 court case. "Nigell Pincebec et Alic uxor eius" paid a fine for "custodia terre et heredis Walt Biset vs Rob de Tresgoz et Sibill ux eius", in Herefordshire, dated 1204. [4]
In 13th John (1212), Michaelmas Term, Robert de Tregoze and Sibilla his wife are found impleading Ralph de St. Maur for land in Bren, in Somersetshire, the right of the said Sibilla and in Trin. Term, 14th John, they had recovered the said lands against St. Maur. Sibilla de Ewyas.[2]
In the inquest of 1212, Rogert de Tregoz appears as holding in Herefordshire one knight's fee and a half in right of his wife.[3]
Robert de Tresgoz died 1213/14. [4]
Sir Robert de Tregoz died shortly before 4 June 1214.[3]
He died sometime before 29 April 1215.[5][8][9]
Salzman notes that a Robert de Tregoz was given a temporary grant of land worth L12 in Tolleshunt on 30 August 1213, which, if this was the same Robert, would have been shortly before his death, because Roger de Clifford married Sibyl soon after. [7]
