Air Chief Marshal Sir Douglas Claude Strathern Evill KCB GBE AFC DSC was born on 10 October 1892 in Broken Hill, New South Wales (Australia). He was the son of Frederick Claude Evill and Sybella Strathmere Murray. ^[1]

Douglas married Henrietta Kleinwort, daughter of Sir Alexander Drake Kleinwort, 1st Bt. and Etienette Girard, on 8 October 1920 in Christ Church, Mayfair, City of Westminster, Middlesex.

He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (DL) of Hampshire.

He was decorated with the awards of the Air Force Cross (AFC) and the Distinguished Service Cross (DSC) in 1916, and conferred the knighthoods of Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB) in 1943 and Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire (GBE) in 1946. Allied nations also bestowed high honours on Douglas, in the form of Knight of the Legion of Honour (France), Commander's Cross with Star of the Order of Polonia Restituta (Poland), Commander of the Legion of Merit (United States) and Military Order of the White Lion, First Class (Czechoslovakia).

He attained the senior rank of Air Chief Marshal (ACM) in the Royal Air Force.

Aged 78 years, Sir Douglas passed away on 22nd March 1971 at home at South Lawn, Cheriton Close, Winchester, Hampshire ^[2] and is buried in the Holy Trinity Church Cemetery, Cuckfield, Sussex. He was survived by his wife, who passed in 1980.
