"Wagon Trains", large groups of covered wagons that travelled together for safety and protection, were a common way for pioneers to travel as they migrated west. These are the known details of the wagon train this person travelled on:
Edward Evans was involved in the westward expansion of the USA (Oregon Trail). See Trails and Wagon Trains.
Edward was twenty-two years old in 1852, when he traveled the Oregon Trail to Linn County, Oregon, and it is reasonable to assume that he drove his own wagon with his supplies for the journey, and for establishing his farm when he arrived. With him on the Oregon Trail were his parents, his married sister Mary Ann (Evans) Sherrill and her husband James, their baby niece, Mary Jane Holloway, whose mother died on or before the journey, the baby's father William L. Hollaway, and others who were friends, neighbors and family. One of them was eight year old Mary A. Kyniston, the daughter of Thomas Kyniston, born in Wales. Kyniston's wife, Sarah Williams, born in Pennsylvania, died prior to the trip. Mary Ann Kyniston lived with Richard Evans and his second wife, Sarah Shepherd.
Edward established his own Land Grant farm of 167.01 acres, next to his father Richard's grant, right on the Willamette River, at Irish Bend. He was also near the Land Grant established by his sister Mary Sherrill and her husband, James.[2]
Mary Ann Kyniston married Edward Evans 19 April 1861, when she fifteen and a half years old.[3]They had been acquainted at least since she was a six year old girl in the house of Edward's brother David Evans, [4] and later when Richard moved his family to Oregon, Mary Ann lived with Richard and his (second) wife,[5] while Edward then had his own farm next door.
By 1880, Edward and Mary Ann had a five children, as follows:[6]
Martha E. Evans, age 18, m. Willard J Lackey in 1884
John W. Evans, age 16
Mary I Evans, age 14, remained single.
Maria Evans, age 10 (was called Nancy on 1870 census) Remained single.
Edward S. Evans, age 5, married
In 1881, they had another son,
Clarence R. Evans,
Edward Evans was fifteen years older than Mary Ann (Kyniston) Evans, and he died in 1896.[7] His body was laid to rest in Pine Grove Cemetery, Halsey, Linn, Oregon, where his father and other family members were buried.[8]
On the 1900 census, Mary Ann is listed as "widow", and her eldest son John Wesley Evans is head of house, running the farm.[9] The next eldest son, Edward, is 26 years old and he is teaching school,.[10] while Clarence, the youngest son, is nineteen and working on the farm..[11]
The 1900 census shows that Mary Ann's niece came to live with them:
Ten years later, in 1910, John has married, and is living next door on his own farm, owned free and clear. [13]
It is the turn of Clarence to be head of house for his widowed mother, and to run the farm.[14]
Mary Ann (Kyniston) Evans passed away 30 Sep 1915.[15]
Research Notes
Note: the Evans family origins were Welsh.
Note: a single adult was entitled to 160 acres of land under the Donation Land Claim Act. People were also allowed to purchase land from the government, and it looks as if Edward decided to purchase an additional 7.01 acres, possibly in order to get the shape of the land just as he wanted it, or to more easily access an important resource, such as water or timber.
