Lars Magnus, the son of Erik Ersson in Vegerbol and his wife Maria Jonsdotter, was born 5 May 1846.[1][2] When Lars Magnus was 12 years old his father died.[3][4]
Svenskt biografiskt lexikon cites a letter written by Ericsson himself, describing his early years. In his fifteenth year he was allowed to follow a mining engineer and his team to Eggersund in Norway, where the team was prospecting a newly found ore deposit. Lars Magnus was tasked with transporting the rock drill rods, and also served as an assistant in the smithy. This job lasted for two years. After a short period as railway worker in Norway, Lars Magnus Ericsson found apprenticeship with a couple of smiths. He followed one of them to the nail factory in Charlottenberg for some time. Then he sought apprenticeship with a smith in Arvika and next a smith in Karlstad. The town smiths offered more varied and qualified work - but with no other pay than board and lodging.[5] All this time he was still registered with his mother in Vegerbol.
According to some sources Lars Magnus Ericsson constructed a telephone at the age of 17, having read about an invention by the German Johann Philipp Reis. Ericsson's version used a pig's bladder as membrane.[6]
In 1867 Lars Magnus Eriksson moved to Stockholm to work in a mechanical workshop, Öller & Co.[7][5][8][9]
In 1872 Ericsson received a travel stipend to study mechanics abroad. With this as a basis he worked his way from workshop to workshop in Germany and Switzerland - staying in each place as long as there was something new to learn. He returned to Stockholm in 1876 and ventured to start his own business for making electrical instruments. His first bigger job was the constructioon of some telegraph devices for the Swedish Railroads.[5]
Mekanikus Lars Magnus Eriksson married Hilda Carolina Simonsson 6 April 1878.[10] He had met Hilda when he was installing ring signal lines at the Royal Stables, where her father was a harness master.[5]
In 1877 Ericsson began experiments with telephony, constructing telephones and switches, for which he soon found a market. His business grew. What had started in a rented kitchen, eventually became a whole factory complex at Tulegatan in Stockholm. In 1896 the company was incorporated as Aktiebolaget L.M. Ericsson & Co. After a few years he started transferring the executive management of the company to other hands and in 1903 he retired completely.[5]
Factory owner Lars Magnus Ericsson came to Botkyrka from Hedvig Eleonora parish in 1903 with his wife and two sons. The family had bought Alby manor.[11] Here L M Ericsson spent his time mechanizing and electrifying the farm, often with his own inventions.[5]
Direktör Lars Magnus Ericsson died at Hågelby in Botkyrka 17 December 1926.[12]
