Jacob is the son of Johann Els and Anna Welker. He was born about 1775, likely in Ringwood, New Jersey which was the site of Hasenclever's ironworks. The family moved to Goshenhoppen, Pennsylvania before about 1780. He married Mary Magdalene Engel at Goshenhoppen Catholic Church in 1796[1].
