Hiram was born about 1839.
The following story comes from the Clinton County, NY, Civil War Record 1861-1865 Facebook Page:
SHORT MILITARY CAREER - According to the Altona Town Clerk’s Records for 1865, Hiram Eldred enlisted in the 91st Infantry on September 5, 1864, in Plattsburgh and got a $600 town bounty for doing it. He was mustered in on the same day and, with almost 150 other men, was sent to Baltimore. The regiment had just come back from the South and, with many of the 3-year men refusing to re-enlist, they needed more recruits.
Hiram, who had grey eyes, sandy hair and a fair complexion, was 5’ 3 ¾ “ tall, managed to make the muster in October, however he soon became ill and was sent to the Post Hospital at Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor. He was left behind when the regiment moved on to the battlefield near Petersburg in early 1865 and left hospital to come home without receiving a discharge.
Hiram married Maria Maulborn and had a son, Frederick Hiram Eldred, who had children, the last of whom died in 1997. Hiram received his Invalid’s Pension in 1880 and when his wife applied for her Widows Pension in 1890, it wasn’t granted.
