Irene was born in Gilbert Plains in 1933, the 7th child and 6th daughter of Frank and Jean Elmhirst. She left school after grade 11 and worked a few jobs in Gilbert Plains and Winnipeg before going off to Vancouver with a friend. Vancouver wasn't to her liking she went to Edmonton where she got a job with the police department as a switchboard operator. It was there that she met her husband to be, a young beat cop named Bill Gray. Irene and Bill got married in 1955 in Edmonton. They purchased their first home in Edmonton in 1956 and their first child Ian arrived in October. [1]
