Biography

William Elliston came free to Van Diemen's Land (1826-1856)

William Gore Elliston was born on 18 October 1798 in Bath, Somerset, England, the son of Robert William Elliston.^[1]

When around 31 years old, he migrated with his brother from England to Australia, arriving in Hobart Town in the Chatham on the 11th January 1830.^[1]

In Hobart, he was an auctioneer, before moving to Longford to take over a school.^[1]

He married Margaret De Vaux on 25 February 1832 in Hobart Town, following her arrival in the John Woodall on the 17th February 1832. .^[2] They had ten children, nine of whom survived infancy.^[1] Their children were:

• Amelia Maria Elliston (1833–1868)
• William Whitefoord Elliston (1834–1904)
• Charles Henry Elliston (1835–1908)
• Henry Robert Elliston (1837–1838)
• Julia Elliston (1839–1876)^[1]
• Albina Lucy Elliston (1840–1917)
• Walter Frederick Elliston (1843–1865)
• Victor Robert Lowes Elliston (1845–1914)
• Eliza Jane Elliston (1846–1924)
• Margaret Isabel Elliston (1848–1854)

In 1855, William became the second mayor of Hobart.^[1]

William died on 4 December 1872 in Hobart.^[1]
