TO THE MERCHANTS, SHIPOWNERS, AND CHARITABLE OF THE CITY OF SYDNEY. - The loss of the schooner "Isabella," and the lamented death of Captain Ellis, has plunged his family into great distress. He was known as Master of a vessel on this coast for many years, and his character for integrity and propriety of conduct was irreproachable. After toiling twenty years, he had succeeded in purchasing a share in the " Isabella," and was lost on his maiden voyage in the vessel, by which he had hoped to provide for his wife and children, and lay by something for old age. It is earnestly hoped that Captain Ellis's many personal friends, as also the mercantile community, among whom he was universally esteemed; and the charitable public of Sydney, and the Clarence River (where he was a constant trader), will come forward to the assistance of his disconsolate family, and by so doing, show that "men's good deeds live after them." Thomas Buckland, Esq., of the Waterloo Warehouse, has kindly consented to act as treasurer on this melancholy occasion. Subscription lists will he opened at all the Banks, at the office of Messrs. D. Cooper .and Co., and of Messrs. Morris and Co., Albion Wharf.

  • There was more than one Captain Ellis around at this time. See: - Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842 - 1954), Monday 9 October 1854, page 5.

[4] WATER POLICE COURT. Friday. Before the Water Police Magistrate and Mr. S. D. Gordon. Captain Ellis, of the Susan, was charged by Mr. J. N. Beit, one of the owners of that vessel, with an assault. It appeared that the Captain who had sailed with the Susan from Sydney had resigned, and Captain Ellis had been appointed at Singapore to the command, by the agents of Messrs. Beit.
