John Ella was born on 19th December 1802 in Leicester. He was the son of Richard Ella and Catherine Elizabeth (Goddard) Ella. He was christened on 23rd December 1802 in Leicester (Anglican) ^[1].

John is described as an accomplished musician - he made his first professional performance in 1821 in Drury Lane Theatre London^[2].
