In 1841 Thomas' family shared their home with two of his uncles, Samuel Ford and Joseph Ford.
The family was plunged into extreme poverty following Samuel's death, when Thomas was about four years old.[4][5][6]
Thomas was about 8 years old when he was accidentally killed by falling down a mine shaft. He was interred in St Agnes parish.[7][8]
