Biography

Wilbraham Tollemache Edwards was baptised at St. Andrew's in Plymouth on 10th April 1772. His parents were Lieutenant Thomas Edwards and his wife Judith.^[1]

Wilbraham arrived as part of an invasion force, in Isle de France (now Mauritius) in 1810 during the Napoleanic War, seizing the island from France.^[2]

He married twice, firstly to Henrietta Burrowes at St. Thomas in Dublin on 24th November 1797.^[3][4] They had:^[5]

3. Mary Anne
4. Frances Isabella, born 17th March 1808, baptised at St. Marylebone on 29th April 1808.^[4]

He married secondly to the widow Rose Jane Haynes at Bengal on 30th December 1819.^[4] They had four daughters in Bengal:^[4]

1. Jane Wilbraham, born 4th October 1820^[6]
2. Mary Tollemache, born 16th March 1822
3. Emily, baptised 3rd December 1823
4. Mary Judith, born 14th July 1825^[7].

Wilbraham died at Bhurtpore on the morning of 18th January 1826.^[4] His will of 1825 made bequests to:^[5]

• son John Alexander Edwards "from the estate of the late Alexander Burrowes"
• Frances Isabella Edwards "for the care and protection of my wife and her mother Mrs Riddell"
• "all the remainder to my beloved wife Jane Edwards and my dear little children by her".

In a codicile he gives money originally left to son John Alexander to John's sisters Elizabeth, Mary Anne, and Fanny.
