Charles was the eldest son of Gerard Noel and his wife Diana Middleton. Charles was known as Charles Edwardes until 1798 when his family assumed the surname of Noel by Royal license following the death of Henry Noel, 6th Earl of Gainsborough.
He succeeded his father as MP for Rutland in 1808.
In 1823 he succeeded his mother in the barony of Barham.
in 1838 he succeeded his father in the Baronetcy of the Navy.
In 1841 he was created Earl of Gainsborough.
He married four times.
Firstly in 1809 to Elizabeth Welman (daughter of Thomas Welman).[1] There were no issue before her death in 1811.
Secondly in 1817 to Elizabeth Grey, daughter of Sir George Grey, 1st Baronet.[2] They had one son, Charles George Noel, shortly before her death in September 1818.
Thirdly in 1820 to Arabella Hamlyn-Williams. They had two sons and two daughters. Their eldest son was named Gerard. Arabella died shortly after the death of their fourth child in 1829.
Fourthly in 1833 to Lady Frances Jocelyn, daughter of Robert Jocelyn, 3rd Earl of Roden. They had 2 children Roden Berkeley Wriothesley Noel and Victoria Noel.
Lord Gainsborough died in 1866 and was succeeded by his eldest son Charles.[3]
