Biography

Henricus (Edmundiston) de Edmundiston is a member of Edmonstone Clan.
  • Father: H. de Edmundistum.
  • "System of Heraldry", Page: 241., by Alexander Nisbet, "gent., 1816., ("Edmonstone of that Ilk, now designated of Edham or three crescents gules; supported by two camels, proper; and for crest, a camel's head and neck. Workman's Manuscript.") ("The first of his family is said to have been one Admundus, who came with Queen Margaret to Scotland, and to have got from King Malcolm III. some lands near Edinburg, called after him Admunstoun, or Edmistoun, witch became the surname of the family.")
  • "Genealogy of the Lairds of Ednam, and Duntreith", Glasgow, 1699, reprinted by James Mardment, Edinburg, 1824. 18 mo. "The name of Edmonstone first appeared in the county of Mid-Lothian in the beginning of the thirteenth century. Tradition would, indeed, derive it 150 years earlier from Edmundus of the family of the Counts Egmont of Flanders, who is said to have come to Scotland in the reign of Malcolm Canmore, and to have had a grant from David I. The earliest appearance of the name Edmonstone is in a charter where Henry de Edmonstone is styled "Filius E," (The surname of Edmonstone derived from the lands of that name in the parish of newton Mid-lothian is one of great antiquity in Scotland. It certainly is as old as the reign of Alex II. Henricus de Edmonstone is mentioned in a charter of 1212. the origin of the name is "Edmund's Town." --Scotish Irish in America. Chas. Hanna, Vol. 2, p.414.) this may have been the very Edmond who thus founded the family, and gave his name to the lands.
  • The name is also recorded in 1248 when Henricus de Edmundiston was witness to a charter.
  • In 1359, in the reign of David II, an inquest before the Baillie of Musselborough, declared that "Henricus de Edmundiston" had died and that "Johannes de Edmundiston" was his legitimate son and heir. It added that he held land of the Abbey of Dumfermline.
  • The first notice of the name with a date attached is found in a charter, to which Henricus de Edmoundiston is witness, of the year 1248 (Alexander III.), from which time there is every reason to believe it continued to be the principal residence of the elder line, styled of: "that ilk" and " of Edenham," for four centuries, till finally disposed of early in the seventeenth century.

Hi John, my understanding of Latin, is admittedly fairly limited, but I think the endings of names the 'us' is more about context rather than the actual name. It might be better to write his name as Henric or even put Henry as his preferred name?
