Lena Maria Eastcott was born on 18 September 1854 in Brock, Durham, Ontario, Canada, the first born child of John Eastcott (1824–1909) and Eliza Short (~1834–1909). Her grandson Harry always referred to her as Maria pronounced Mariah.
