Biography

Jane was a Friend (Quaker)

Jane was born in 5 November 1916 in Detroit, Michigan, United States. Her parents were Bion Rose East (1885 - 1972) and Norma (Schmidt) East (1886 - 1962).^{[1][2] [3]}

She had a brother, Richard Ives East, born in 1920. He became a pilot during WW II and died while on a flight on 4 April 1943 in Tunisia, Africa.

Jane graduated with a bachelor's degree in Social Work from Duke University and then completed a Master's in Social Work degree from the University of Chicago in 1940. ^[1]

She then began working at the Children's Aid Society of New York City before meeting her future husband in Hawaii. ^[1]

Three years later, her first marriage was to Charles F. Karkalits on 6 June 1943 in Honolulu. They divorced in 1975. ^[4]

Before 1976, she was a longtime resident of Plainfield, Union, New Jersey, United States and was active as a social worker in the school system. There are several newpaper articles about talks and presentations she provided to the community about children, parenting and helping intellectually disabled children. ^[1]

Jane, a lifelong Quaker, was a social worker who worked with individuals in the more impoverished areas of New York to help them with housing and to navigate services. ^[5] In 1976, she moved to Washington, DC, to work at Georgetown University Hospital with the Child Development Center. She retired from this position in 1982. ^[1]

She married Oscar Emil Bonny on 24 August 1980. Emil was a pastor for the Congregational Church in Kansas. Oscar died in 1992. Jane passed away July 4, 2000 in Kendal, Pennsylvania and was buried at Birch Lake Cemetery, Cass, Michigan, United States. ^[6]
