Biography

Samuel Drinkwater
son of Thomas, is the 2nd generation of this surname found in Colonial America, and a descendant of Thomas Drinkwater.

Samuel Drinkwater, seventh child and seventh son of Thomas Drinkwater and Elizabeth Haskell, was born in 1711 in Middleboro in the Province of Massachusetts Bay; a town founded by English religious dissenters called the Brownists who developed their governance institutions in Middelburg before emigrating on the Mayflower, and were the earliest settlers of Middleborough where their town and church governance ethics were continued.

His mother, Elizabeth Haskell, was related to a passenger on the Mayflower - Patience Soule - daughter of George Soule Sr.

Samuel moved to Dighton, Bristol, where he married Dorothy Josselyn. All of their 10 children were born in Dighton.

Samuel and Dorothy Jossely married Apr 1734 in Massachusetts.
"Samuel Drinkwater and Dorrithy Joselin entered there intentions of marriage in Apriel ye 25: anno: 1734."

They had 10 children—8 girls before the last two boys—Samuel Jr and Thomas.

Four daughters married four Cudworth brothers: David, Charles, Nathaniel, and Paul. Edward, spouse of Abigail, was a cousin. Both of Samuel's sons married Payne/Paine sisters.
