James Dowling married Nancy Martin in 1844 in Darlington. They were the parents of fourteen children, five of whom died as babies and whose names are not known.[1]
James Dowling was living in Southern Division, Dale, Alabama when the 1850 United States Census was taken. He was a 27-year-old farmer. Other persons living in the household were Nancy, who was presumed to be his wife, and 3 children, presumed to be their children together.[2]
When the 1860 United States Census was taken, James Dowling was living in Dale, Alabama, United States with Nancy L. Dowling, who was presumed to be his wife, and with 7 children. He was presumed to be the father of the children James was 37 years old and working as a farmer.[3]
James Dowling died on 12 September 1864 in Ozark, Dale, Alabama at the age of 41.
