Biography

Paralee was born in 1858 in Alabama, United States, the daughter of Mary Lee Saunders and Green Berry Dowis.[1][2][3]

Alabam married a Smith County, Texas farmer James William "Jim" Everett in 1875.[4] In 1880, Paralee had given birth to their first child. Living between related families Swinney and Stamps, they were probably in the same area where Jim grew up.[5] In 1900, the family owned their home (and a mortgage) and her husband and son Hugh Carl Everett worked the farm. There were five other children in the household.[6]

Alabam died in 1904,[7] leaving her husband as a single parent to his two youngest preteen children. She is said to have been buried near her husband near the top of the hill left of the entrance, probably marked with a native stone.[8]

Research Notes

Dowis, Douse, Doss, or Dice?

On her daughter Susie Bell Swinney's death certificate, her maiden name is listed as Dice, not Dowis.[9] The death certificate is problematic in other ways. First, Susie Bell Swinney is Sudia Bell "Sudie" Everett Swinney.[10] If the dead person's name is wrong, the accuracy of the other names on the death certificate must be considered of questionable accuracy. Second, this is the only location where James William Everett has been referred to as "Will".

On her son Ed Jackson Everett's death certificate, her maiden name is listed as Dowse.[11]

On her son Horace Roland Everett's death certificate,[12] her maiden name is given as Douse, but whoever provided the information didn't even have her first name, so this is unreliable.

On her daughter Ida Everett Johnson's death certificate,[13] her maiden name is given as Doss.

Birth Location

Though later census takers record her birthplace in Texas, the 1860 census records her birthplace for "P. A. Davis" as Alabama when she was one year old shortly after the family migrated from Alabama to Cherokee County, Texas near Rusk.[2] Since the census taker was diligent about recording how old some other infants were in months, this indicates that in April 1860, Alabam was between 1 and 2 years old, which could place her birth in late 1858 to early 1859.
