William Edgar Dove was a Captain in the Twelfth United States Infantry.
CAPTAIN DOVE’S FATE BELLAIRE, O., June 2 – The mother of Captain William E. Dove, who was downed in the Niagara River at Fort Niagara in New York, last Wednesday, lives at Barnesville, this county, and is prostrated with grief. His sisters also live there. Captain Dove enlisted in the 126th Regiment, O.V.I. and was afterwards Lieutenant of the 196th. He was taken prisoner, and while being escorted to Libby escaped and made his way across the Union lines when he was promoted to a captaincy in the 196th. He was in command at Fort Niagara at the time of his death which occurred while crossing the river in a small boat. The G.A.R. Posts at the county passed resolutions of respect for him. - WASHINGTON (PA) WEEKLY REPORTER, 7 June 1884
He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.
