Biography

William Dove was a convict after the Third Fleet transported to Van Diemen's Land

William Dove (sometimes mistranscribed Dow/Dew) was born Reepham, Norfolk, England, 05 August 1809. [citation needed]

He was a ploughman. [1]

In the 1830s he participated in the Swing Riots as a "machine breaker", rebelling against farming machinery introduced during the Industrial Revolution. [1]

He was convicted in Norfolk of being a rioter, and as punishment was transported from England to Australia in 1831 on the ship Proteus along with 87 other male convicts. [2]

He was pardoned February 1836. [1]

He married Sarah Ann Stanforth, Hobart, Tasmania, 22 March 1838. [3]

William died aged 57, Hobart 27 September 1866. [4]

Research Notes

Possibly the son of William Dove christened Reepham 1787, based on matching name and location.

Another successful machine breaker was the Norfolk ploughman William Dove, who had received a free pardon in February 1836. In March 1838, at New Town, he married Sarah Ann Stanhope, the daughter of an emancipated convict. The witnesses to the marriage were a fellow machine breaker, the Oxfordshire wheelwright/carpenter, Joseph Fisher and Sarah's sister, Rosanna. (In 1842, when Joseph and Rosanna married, the Doves reciprocated as witnesses). In 1839, Dove bought the Scotch Thistle Hotel in Liverpool Street, Hobart for 500 pounds and remained licensee of the hotel until 1853. He sold it for 1410 pounds that year. By 1855, he owned a number of properties in Hobart Town, but his greatest purchase was the country mansion and property of Oakwood, still standing by the Midlands Highway at Mangalore, for 3250 pounds in 1860. He died in 1866, a very wealthy man.

Two William Doves in Hobart, Tasmania

When the convict transport ship "Proteus" arrived in Hobart on 4/8/1831, on board was William Dove, 21, a Luddite (or Swing’s rioter) of Norfolk.

This created a problem for future genealogists as there were now two men named William Dove in Hobart, and both were convicts of about the same age.

As stated in the profile above, William Dove of Norfolk, illiterate, married Sarah Ann Stanhope aka Stanforth/Stammers/Stanfield on 22/3/1838. He received an early pardon, and died in 1866. (Ref: Archives Office of Tasmania - Con 31/10; 18/18; 14/3). Both Sarah Ann's parents were convicts. William Dove of Norfolk's will, dated 1866, is a KEY document: signed with his mark (he was illiterate all his life), it mentions his wife, Sarah, and his family in Norfolk.

The other William Dove (Dove-1687), a silk-weaver turned poacher, of Bethnal Green, off the ship "Manlius", married Mary Ryan. He was literate. Many people still confuse the two, which is why the above-mentioned will is so important.
