Benjamin was the son of William Doggett[4] and Ann Langley baptised on 28 Oct 1636 in Ipswich, Suffolk, England.[5] He attended Cambridge University receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1658 and Master of Arts in 1662 (New Style). His studies prepared him for the ministry and he was ordained as an Anglican minister soon after receiving his degree. He started as a curate in Stoke-by-Clare but by 1664 was a curate and schoolmaster in the larger town of Hadleigh where he married Jane Garrard (a widow) in September of that year.[6][7] They had several children while still in England, Benjamin,[8] Jane,[9] WIlliam,[10] and John.[11]
Benjamin's cousin, William Doggett, helped arrange a ministry in Virgina and the family emigrated there in 1669 (1670 New Style). He became the rector of Christ Church parish and later found the White Chapel parish for which he also served as rector. Benjamin and Jane had three more children in Virginia.
Benjamin died in Lancaster Virginia in Jan 1683 (New Style)[12][13] and requested that he be buried beneath Whitechapel Church but the original wooden church was replaced by a brick church 100 yards away and the site of the remains is unknown.
Research Notes
Many dates are in the Old Style where the year started on March 25th rather than January 1st. In is sometimes less confusing to convert years in that period by incrementing by one if and only if one is certain that it has not already been incremented (another method is to state the year in both styles e.g. 1662/3). One should also recognize that dates were Julian in the Old Style. It is best to leave them unaltered. It was not until 1752 that Britain and her colonies switched to the new style and the adjustment for the Gregorian dates was done by going from Wednesday Sep 2 to Thursday the 14th the next day making the year 1752 only 354 days. Son William was born in Nov 1668. As it is Nov, we do not need to question the year. Son John is registered as being baptized in Mar 1669. We can be certain that this date is using the Old Style year and could have been written 1669/70, or, using the New Style as simply 1670. We can exclude the year as New Style since it would have followed the birth of William by only four months. This means that Benjamin and his family migrated to Virginia in 1670 New Style. Benjamin's death was in January and presents the question of Old Style vs New Style years being used. On a memorial plaque, the year is listed as 1682 with no indication of whether that was the Old or New Style. In the History of the Doggett/Daggett Family by Samuel Doggett, the year is listed as 1681. Will signed Mar 1681/2 and probated in Jan 1682/3. The year 1682 is confident but seeing the original will or an image of it would be helpful.
