Biography

Clarence was born on 12 February 1867[1] at South Stoke, Oxfordshire. He is the ninth child and fifth son of Thomas Dodd and Juliana Dodd who married in 1855. His birth was registered at Wallingford, Berkshire registration district in the second quarter of 1867.

Although Clarence was the fifth son to be born, each of his four earlier brothers died in infancy, and his only younger brother died as a toddler. Thus Clarencee grew up as the only son, with six sisters.

At the 1871 census two more siblings had been added and the family were found in High Street, Saint Mary le More parish, Wallingford, Berkshire. The birth details of the youngest child listed suggests the family moved to Wallingford in 1869 or 1870. Details - father Thomas Dodd (45, cattle salesman, born North Stoke), mother Juliana Dodd (41, born Ipsden, Oxfordshire), sister Dinah M Dodd (12, scholar, born Checkendon, Oxfordshire), sister Hellen (sic) J Dodd (8, scholar, born South Stoke, Oxfordshire), sister Madeline Dodd (7, scholar, born South Stoke, Oxfordshire), sister Emily N Dodd (5, scholar, born South Stoke, Oxfordshire), Clarence Dodd (4, born South Stoke, Oxfordshire), sister Florence M Dodd (2, born South Stoke, Oxfordshire) and brother Frank Dodd (6 months, born Wallingford, Berkshire). A governess, a nurse and a general servant were also listed.

At the 1881 census Clarence Dodd (14, born South Stoke, Berkshire) was at Felstead School, Essex, a large boarding school which formed an enumeration district on its own. In the meantime during this census the family home remained at High Street, Saint Mary le More parish, Wallingford, Berkshire. Details - mother Juliana Dodd (50, commission salesman wife, born, Ipsden), sister Dinah M Dodd (22), sister Hellen J Dodd (18), sister Madeline Dodd (17), sister Florence M Dodd (12, scholar) and new sister Isobel J Dodd (9, scholar, born Wallingford, Berks). Two resident servants are recorded - cook and housemaid. Clarence's father was absent from home at this census as he was attending a cattle market at Islington, London.

At the 1891 census Clarence was at the family home which was still in High Street, Wallingford. Details - father Thomas Dodd (64, farmer and salesman, born North Stoke, Oxfordshire), mother Juliana Dodd (60, born Ipsden, Oxfordshire), sister Emily N Dodd (single, 25, born South Stoke, Oxfordshire), and Clarence Dodd (single, 24, farmer's son, born South Stoke, Oxfordshire). Two resident servants are recorded - cook and housemaid.

Both Clarence's parents died in 1895.

In 1897 Clarence Dodd married Marie Rose Buhl. The marriage was registered at Wandsworth registration district, London, in the first quarter of the year.

At the 1901 census the family home was recorded at "Roselea", Crowmarsh Gifford, Oxfordshire. Clarence had followed his father into the cattle sales business. Details - Clarence Dodd (34, cattle saleman, born South Stoke, Oxfordshire), wife Marie R Dodd (25, born Kensington, London), and son Thomas C Dodd (3, born Crowmarsh Gifford, Oxfordshire). There were three servants listed - nurse, housemaid, and cook.

At the 1911 census the only address given for the family was Crowmarsh, Wallingford. Details - Clarence Dodd (44, assistant corn merchant, born South Stoke, Oxfordshire), wife Marie Rose Dodd (35, born Kensington), and new son Lionel Clarence Dodd (9, born Crowmarsh, Oxfordshire). One servant was retained in the house. This census also recorded that husband and wife had been married for 14 years and there had been two children, both of whom were still living.

Phone books for 1934 listed Clarence Dodd at "Roselea", Crowmarsh, connected to the Wallingford exchange.[2]

Clarence's wife died in 1937. Her address at the time was "Roselea", Crowmarsh, Berkshire.

In June 1938 Clarence Dodd, "of Crowmarsh", re-married, marrying Elizabeth Hesketh, "of Cowbridge, Glamorganshire", at St Mark's Church, Ocker Hill, Staffordshire. The ceremony was taken by the bride's brother, Rev. T S Perrott.[3]. The marriage was registered at Wednesbury registration district, Staffordshire, in the second quarter of 1938, with the bride recorded as Fanny E Hesketh.[4]

In the 1939 England and Wales register Clarence Dodd (born 12 February 1867, married, retired farmer), and his new wife Elizabeth H Dodd (b. 20 July 1887, married, catering assistant), were listed at 55 High Street, Wallingford, Berkshire, in the same household as Clarence's sister Florence Rogerson (Florence Miriam (Dodd) Rogerson (1868-))(b. 15 December 1868, widow), and Gladys Rogerson (b. 3 April 1893, single).

Electoral registers for 1947 listed Clarence Dodd, and Elizabeth Hesketh-Dodd, at "Mount Vernon", Westgate Street, Cowbridge, Glamorgan.[5]
