Biography

Beatrice Lillian (Dixon) Gray was born on April 20, 1903 in Williamstown, Victoria, Australia. Her parents were Norman Walter Dixon (1878 - 1919) and Charlotte Louisa (Bell) Dixon (1880 - 1964).[1]

Beatie (as she was affectionately known by those nearest and dearest to her) lived with her parents and three siblings in a residence attached to a barber's salon where her father had his business. As her parents weren't particularly well-off financially, Beatrice had to find gainful employment as soon as she had completed basic education and worked for a biscuit manufacturer, Swallow & Ariell in Port Melbourne. [2] In those days, having a wife or daughter sent out to work in gainful employment was frowned upon by society, however, it was a family necessity.

When she met and soon after married Claude Gray her wardrobe consisted of little more than a frock and a single pair of shoes.

Beatrice married Claude Leslie Gray (1899 - 1983) on May 15, 1920 in Williamstown.[3]
