Hi Simon, many thanks for your contributions to Wikitree, and for the great sources. You accidentally created a duplicate profile for James Hardman-3240. I’ve proposed a merge with James Hardman-2102 (they have the same christening record, but the one on Hardman-2102 shows he was born in Broadley), please complete the merge when you get a minute and please preserve the sources on both profiles - he was described as from Broadley in the image of the marriage in the parish register on the ancestry source I added to your profile so I’m sure you have the correct man and his existing profile, also has his father George attached.

Best regards,

Maddy (one of the England project leaders)

Hi Maddy, thanks for pointing this out. I thought that I carefully checked the proposed matches before creating a new profile. Not sure how I missed this, but good that you spotted this for me. Interesting that you share the same surname but are only very remotely related to my great-great-great grandfather.

It’s an unusual name in the rest of England, but very common in Lancashire. I’m following the name and have been slowly looking at the Hardman profiles as they come up on Wikitree. I think they may originate from the same family, but many are manual labourers and it gets hard to work out who is who the further back we go.

My own Hardman line originates in a Mary Bamber who married a Hardman, then was widowed and had another son by a man named Hodgson. Her illegitimate son, Richard Hardman, is my ancestor, so we are technically not really Hardmans at all!

Thanks for merging Simon and good luck with your research,

Maddy
