Biography

Oren Dibble was born about 1793 in New York, United States. His parents are unknown.

Oren married Katreen "Catharine" Diamond, the daughter of John Diamond U.E.L. before 1815.[1]In 1817 his wife made a petition for 200 acres of land as the daughter of a U.E.L. She gave permission for Oren to locate and take out the deed on the land.[2]

In 1851 Oren was widowed and living in Fredericksburgh, Canada West. His son John and his family were also there, listed just above Oren on the 1851 Census. Above the son's family, was the Cole family. Listed in their household was Mary Post, a widow, staying with them. Oren would marry her within a year. [3]

Oren married Mary Ann (Cole) Post, a widow, about the 15th of August, 1852 in Clark's Mills, Lennox and Addington, Ontario, Canada. [4][5][6]

Oren died on the 26th of August, 1875 in North Fredericksburgh Township, Lennox Addington, Ontario, Canada. His death was reported by his 2nd wife, Mary Ann (Cole) Post Dibble [7]

Research Notes

In the 1851 Census Oren, age 58, a widow, was shown in his own household in Fredericksburg. Living with him is Elizabeth Peters, age 80 b. New York. Not sure what the relationship is. His son's wife was daughter of Frederick Keller UE who married an Elizabeth Peters. This Elizabeth Peters is likely a relation to Elizabeth Peters Keller.

Who are Oren's Parents?

Two Dibble families are known to have been in the Fredericksburgh area in the early 1800's. Eli Dibble (1757-abt.1829) and Asa Dibble U.E.L. (abt.1761-abt.1828). But so far no connection to either family has been found.

Eli Dibble (Dibble-79) could very well be the father of Oren Dibble (born ca. 1793, New York). This would have been after the 1790 Census for Eli (at Danbury, Connecticut) but before the 1799 Census for Eli (at Adolphustown, Ontario). If so, Eli Dibble very likely lived in New York State sometime between 1790 and 1799 (especially ca. 1793), and this would explain why Oren's birth does not appear in Danbury records (Kinman-87; 20 April 2023)

Notes by Fred Blair

There is a gap in your Dibble family history during the War of 1812 and you do not appear to have researched records from that event. There is a slight possibility that those records may reveal more about the Dibble and Diamond families. All men between the ages of 16 and 60 were required to report for militia duty by law. The militia records therefore list who was living in each township between 1812 and 1815.

As Oren Dibble was about 19 years old in 1812, his name may appear in the militia rolls and related documents. His father and brothers may have served as well. If we assume that Oren was living in the area of Fredericksburgh at that time, he probably would have served in the Addington or Lennox Militias. Even though the counties were amalgamated in 1800 they had separate militia regiments in 1812.

In June, 1812, each regiment was to form about 2 flank companies of young men who were able to serve for extended periods of time. They received special training to engage the Americans in combat. I did not find the Dibble surname in those records but did find:

Private Marcus Diamond, Lennox Militia, page 68

Private Jacob Diamond, Addington Militia, page 63, “died during service”

After the war both men received a militia land grant. The average of a flanker was 25. Do you want that information that would tell you the township or county that they were living in after the war?

There may have been an additional 8 companies in each regiment which served for brief periods of time. I did not search those rolls as it would take hours to review hundreds of pages. If you want to take on that task, I can send you links to the online rolls.

After the war, Upper Canadians who suffered personal losses could make a petition for reimbursement. The Diamond and Dibble surnames were not in those records and there were only a few claims from Fredericksburgh.
