Biography

Alan Adams Dennison was born 19 Jan 1948 in Buffalo, Erie County, New York, USA. He was the son of Gretchen Adams and Richard "Dick" Wheeler Dennison. He had an older brother W G Dennison (living).

The family lived in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania before moving to Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware.

They also owned property on Murray Isle in the Thousand Islands located in Clayton, New York along the Saint Lawrence River.

1960s

In spring 1966, Alan (18) graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in Wilmington. The yearbook mentions he participated in basketball and chess and was interested in jazz and science fiction. [1]

In the late 1960s, his brother W G Dennison (20s) married E A Rodenhiser (20s) in Alexandria, Virginia. Mr Dennison was white, single, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, worked for the US Navy, resided at US Communications Station in Washington, DC, and the son of Richard W and Gretchen Adams Dennison. Ms Rodenhiser was white, single, born in Wareham, Massachusetts, worked in reservations for United Air Lines, resided at 207 C Hunting Towers in Alexandria, and the daughter of Ernest A and Betsy Small Rodenhiser. They were married by William R Sengel, minister of the Presbyterian church. [2]

1970s

1970, Alan Dennison graduated from the University of Delaware with a bachelor's degree in psychology.

On 24 Sep 1976, Alan A Dennison (28) married Helen Elizabeth Stang (29) in Elkton, Cecil County, Maryland. Helen was born 8 Feb 1947 in Chester, Delaware County, Pennsylvania and the daughter of Howard L and Florence Wallace Stang. [3]

1990s

In Apr 1993, his sister-in-law Barbara (Stang) Fritz died. [4]

In Feb 2009, his mother Gretchen Dennison (93) died. [5]

In Jul 2011, his father Dick Dennison (96) died.[6]

On 22 Jul 2014, Alan Dennison (66) died. His ashes were buried at Westminster Presbyterian Church Memorial Garden.

AGE: 66 • Wilmington

Age 66, of Wilmington, DE., died peacefully at home on Wednesday, July 16, 2014, from pancreatic cancer. Alan Adams Dennison was born in Buffalo, NY., in 1948, to the late Gretchen (Adams) Dennison and Dr. Richard Dennison of Wilmington, DE. In 1966, he graduated from Mt. Pleasant H.S.; and earned a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Delaware in 1970. He was later employed by Sears and retired as a Heating and Cooling Specialist.

Alan is survived by his loving wife of 37+ years, Helen (Stang) Dennison; adoring daughter, Heather Dennison; brother and best friend, William Dennison and wife, Dianne, of Braselton, Georgia; one nephew, Gregory Fritz; and four nieces, Lauren (Fritz) Dogan, Rachel (Fritz) Sterback, Caroline (Black) Duda, and Holly Stang.

Alan was an avid reader, played bridge and chess, enjoyed gardening and feeding the backyard birds. His favorite vacation spot is at the family cottage on Murray Isle, Clayton, NY., on the St. Lawrence River—clear water, cool temperatures, swimming, boating, fishing, waterskiing and the companionship of 2nd, 3rd, and 4th generation cousins.

A private memorial service will be held at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, Wilmington, DE. She was raised in Bethel Twp., and had two siblings; Helen and Corey Stang. She married Laurence Fritz when we she was 18 years old. She worked as an Editorial Assistant for a publisher in Swarthmore, PA. After Barbara became a mother she was an aerobic instructor. She had three children; Lauren, Rachel and Gregory. Barbara was very artistically talented, and was a wonderful person, mother, wife and friend. She died at the home of her parents in Bethel Township, Delaware County, PA. Her funeral service was held at Edward L. Collins Funeral Home, Inc., in Oxford, PA. Her service was held on Tuesday, April 20, 1993 at 11AM. Officiating: Reverend Theodore S. Atkinson. Interment at Oxford Cemetery Oxford, PA. Barbara's Pallbearers were: Eric Fritz, Alan Dennison, Bernard Harahan, John Slauch, Dale Smith and Eugene Pienkowski.

Gretchen was born in 1915 to the late Henry D. and Margaretha (Gardner) Adams in Wilkinsburg, a suburb of Pittsburgh, PA. She graduated from Wilkinsburg High School in 1933. She went on to major in speech therapy at Chatham University, elected Class President, and graduated with a B.S. in 1937. In school she liked acting, Shakespeare and poetry; also, horseback riding, tennis and dancing. A talented homemaker throughout her life, Gretchen enjoyed cooking and gardening; bridge, golf, swimming, boating, and white water rafting. An avid reader, she liked traveling and learned Spanish and Italian. She worked as a substitute librarian in the Brandywine School District, a political campaign volunteer, for many years served as State Secretary for A.A.U.W. and was a Docent at Winterthur Museum. Over the past several years, she sorely missed her stay at the family's summer cottage on the St. Lawrence River in the Thousand Islands, NY. She is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, Richard Dennison, DSc, of Wilmington; son, William Dennison and wife, DiAnne of Braselton, GA; son, Alan Dennison and wife, Helen of Wilmington; and granddaughter Heather Dennison of Wilmington. A private memorial service was held at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Wilmington where she was a member for more than fifty years. Dennison was born in Oswego, NY, July 16, 1914 to Ada M (Pease) Dennison, RN and Boyd Coe Dennison, MEE, Professor of Electrical Engineering at Carnegie Institute of Technology, Pittsburgh, PA. Richard was predeceased by his sister, Marcia P. Dennison, and brother, Boyd C. Dennison, Jr. In 1932, Richard graduated from Wilkinsburg High School, Pittsburgh, PA; and, graduated in 1936 from Carnegie Institute of Technology (Carnegie Mellon Univ.) with a BS in Physics. Richard was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha, Tau Beta Pi, Phi Kappa Phi, Scabbard and Blade, Christian Association Cabinet, Teknon, and Swimming Team. After working a year at General Electric (1936-1937), Richard returned to Carnegie to earn a MS; and, in 1941, his Doctor of Science Degree in Physics and Mathematics. In 1940, Richard was married (68 years) to--as he would often say, “the light of my life,”-- Gretchen Adams-Dennison, who died in 2009. He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army, Signal Corps, and worked on the early stages of radar and I.F.F. (identify friend or foe). He was discharged in 1953 with the rank of Lt. Colonel. He was employed with E.I. DuPont Company, Textile Fibers, Research Dept. In 1976, after 30 years of service, retired as a Sr. Physicist. He took an active part in the Carrcroft Boy Scout Troop. Joined the Brandywine YMCA, became a Board Member; and the YMCA”s Men’s Club. He taught mathematics at Pennsylvania Military College (Widener University). Richard and his family were members of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Wilmington since 1957, and served as a Deacon and Usher. Richard enjoyed tennis, competitive swimming, fishing, boating, golfing, dancing, reading, bridge and traveling the USA and other countries; but, his favorite place in the world is his summer island cottage on the St. Lawrence River, NY, where he could do all those things and do it with the family he loved. He is survived by two sons: William Dennison and wife, DiAnne, Braselton, GA; Alan Dennison and wife, Helen, Wilmington, DE; and, one grandchild: Heather Dennison, Wilmington, DE. A private memorial service will be held at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, Wilmington, DE. Contributions may be made to the Employee Appreciation Fund at the Kutz Home, 704 River Road, Wilmington, DE 19809.
