Biography

On 4 November 1832, Filippo Demma, age 22 (b. 1810), son of Giuseppe Demma and Giuseppa Battaglia, marries Rosalia Bova, age 19 (b. 1813), daughter of Giuseppe Bova and Angela di Mercurio, in Termini Imerese. [1]

Filippo and Rosalia have twelve known children, all born in Termini Imerese: four daughters named Giuseppa (1833, 1836, 1838, and 1843), Agostino (1841), Salvadore (1844), Lorenzo (1846), Luigi (1848), Francesco (1850), Maria Carmela (1852), Angela (1854), and Mariano (1857).

The first daughter named Giuseppa is born 10 December 1833 and baptized the next day.[2] She is named after her paternal grandmother, as is traditional for the first born daughter. She is presumed to have died before her sister is born in 1836.

The second Giuseppa is born 13 January 1836 and baptized the next day.[3] She is presumed to have died before her sister is born in 1838.

The third Giuseppa is born 22 June 1838 and baptized the next day. Filippo is 26 (b. 1812), and Rosalia is 24 (b. 1814). Her paternal grandmother is Giuseppa Battaglia.[4] She is presumed to have died before her sister is born in 1843.

Agostino is born and baptized on 5 October 1841 in Termini Imerese, the son of Filippo Demma, age 30 (b. 1811) and Rosalia Bova, age 30 (b. 1811).[5]

The fourth Giuseppa is born 7 May 1843[6] and baptized the next day.[7] Because her younger sisters are given other names than Giuseppa, this girl is presumed to have survived.

On 13 December 1844, Giuseppa Battaglia in Demma, age 60 (b. 1784), reports the birth of a boy to Rosalia Bova, age 23 (b. 1821), and Filippo Demma, age 36 (b. 1808), bottegaio (shopkeeper), in their home on 12 December. The baby is named Salvadore Demma.[8]

Lorenzo is born 8 September 1846.[9]

On 6 July 1848, Giuseppa Battaglia in Demma, age 60 (b. 1788), reports the birth of a boy to Rosalia Bova, age 36 (b. 1812), and Filippo Demma, age 36 (b. 1812), bottegaio, in their home that day in Termini Imerese. The baby is named Luigi Demma.[10]

On 27 January 1850, Angela Mercurio in Bova, age 60 (b. 1790), reports the birth of a boy to Rosalia Bova, her daughter, age 30 (b. 1820), and Filippo Demma, age 40 (b. 1810), shopkeeper, in their home in Termini Imerese on 26 January 1850. The boy is named Francesco Demma.[11]

Maria Carmela is born and baptized 4 April 1852.[12]

Angela is born and baptized on 13 February 1854.[13] Traditionally, the second born daughter is named after her maternal grandmother.

Mariano is born 25 August 1857 and baptized the next day. Filippo is 40 (b. 1817) and Rosalia is 38 (b. 1819).[14]

On 25 April 1874, Lorenzo Demma, celibe (bachelor), age 27 (b. 1847), filandiere (weaver), born in Termini on 9 September 1846, resident in Termini, son of Filippo Demma and Rosalia Bova; and Liboria La Scola, nubile (literally, virgin; never married), age 17 (b. 1857), born in Termini on 1 August 1857, resident in Termini, daughter of Sebastiano La Scola and Teresa Pusateri; have published their intention to marry and with the consent of their parents. They are pronounced united in matrimony.[15]

On 22 January 1877, Luigi Demma, celibe, age 28 (b. 1848), merchant, native resident of Termini, son of Filippo Demma and Rosalia Bova; and Giuseppa Balsamo, age 22 (b. 1854), cucitrice (seamstress), native resident of Termini, daughter of Giuseppe Balsamo and Domenica Todaro; announce their marriage in the civil record of Termini Imerese, where all are resident. Witnesses are Vincenzo Torricello, age 56 (b. 1820), galeltiere?, and Agostino Giuffre’, age 34 (b. 1842), civile.[16]

On 3 September 1881, Francesco Demma, celibe, age 31 (b. 1850), shepherd (pastajo), native resident of Termini, son of Filippo Demma and Rosalia Bova; and Giuseppa Cira’, nubile, age 23 (b. 1858), seamstress (cucitrice), native resident of Termini, daughter of Giuseppe Cira’ and Dorotea Speciale; announce their intention to marry in the civil record of Termini Imerese, where all are resident. Witnesses are Giuseppe Balsamo, age 23 (b. 1858), cucitrice, and Antonino Cira’, age 35 (b. 1846), cucitrice.[17]
