Biography

Josephine E. Sampson, 97, Grand Forks, ND passed away on Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at Valley Eldercare Center, Grand Forks.

Josephine Elizabeth Deitz was born November 22, 1916 the daughter of Richard and Ella (Schrump) Deitz in Grand Forks. She attended school in Grand Forks, including St. James High School, before marrying Edward T. Sampson.

All of her life, Josephine stayed close to home where she enjoyed raising her children, caring for her grandchildren, cooking and baking. She even enjoyed cleaning and took pride in a spotless home.

Josephine and Edward celebrated 59 years of marriage before he passed away in 2001. She and Edward were long-time members of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Grand Forks.

Josephine is survived by her daughters, Eileen Bertleson, Janice (Robert) Russell, Darlene (Gary) Goetz all of Grand Forks, ND; sons, Richard (Pamela), Grand Forks, ND and James Edward "Bubb", Kingston, NY; sister, Dorothy (Mrs. Wesley) Johnson, Grand Forks, ND; twelve grandchildren and many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward; an infant son, Edward James; grandsons, Darrin Carlyle Bertleson and Douglas Anthony Goetz; her parents; sisters, Donna Norman and Elaine "Snook" Johnson; brothers, Robert, Walter, "Sonny" and James; a son-in-law, Oliver "Butch" Bertleson and brother-in-law, Wesley Johnson.

Memorial Liturgy: 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 5, 2014 in the Historic Norman Funeral Home – Gregory J. Norman Funeral Chapel, Grand Forks, ND. Family Greeting: One hour prior to the liturgy in the funeral chapel on Tuesday. Interment: Calvary North Cemetery, Grand Forks, ND.
