The Commencement was on 4 Jun 1920 and was held in the High School Auditorium. 2 Helen Irene Deffenbaugh's Champaign County, Illinois, Teacher's Certificate is No. 397 dated 28 Jul 1920. It expired on 30 Jun 1922. 2 Teacher's Contract with Helen Deffenbaugh dated 6 Sep 1920 for a term of 8 school months commencing 6 September 1920 for $110 a school month. 2 Helen taught at the Excelsior School District No. 78, Hensley Twp., Champaign Co., Illinois. She had 22 students in grades one through seven. 2 My grandmother never got a driver's license. 2 HELEN KESLER. CHAMPAIGN -- Memorial services for Helen I. She was born July 1, 1901 in Newcomb Township, a daughter of Alva and Clara Guthridge Deffenbaugh. She married Roy Kesler on May 5, 1921 [at the home of her parents] in Condit Township. He died October 29, 1973. Survivors include four sons, Clyde Kesler and Delmar Kesler of rural Champaign, Keith Kesler of rural Urbana and Kenneth Kesler of rural Dewey; a daughter, Frances Tobin of Altamonte Springs, Fla.; 19 grandchildren; and 38 great-grandchildren. She was preceeded in death by two daughters and three brothers. Mrs. Kesler was an [honor] graduate of Champaign High School. She taught one year at the Excelsior School [District 78] in Hensley Township [prior to her marriage] and then farmed with her husband in rural Champaign. She was a member of the Wednesday Friendship Club, a group of farm wives. She was a former member of the United Brethren Church in Newcomb Township and served as an officer of the congregation and was active in the Ladies Aid of the church. [They raised funds through quilting, ice cream socials and other activities.] She later became a member of the First United Methodist Church of Champaign. She crocheted an afghan or made a handcrafted item for each of her grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the First Methodist Church of Champaign or an organization of the donor's choice.
