Biography

Mary Dean was born 17 July 1777 in Virginia and died 8 August 1829.[1][2]

Mary married James Bell, son of Robert and Mary Bell. He was born 23 August 1777 and died 22 June 1823. Both Mary and James are buried in the Bell Cemetery. Her tombstone says that she is wife of James Bell, daughter of William and Eleanor Tase Dean.[2]

Research Notes

Father: The profile attached as this Mary's father - Adam Dean (abt.1730-1787) - includes the following to support that he married Eleanor Teas:

"Page 775.--19th March, 1765. Adam Dean and Eleanor, his wife, to Charles Teas, 5 sh., 310 acres on South River, part of a tract patented to Robert Turk, 6th September, 1736; corner to Robert Turk's land; corner John Patrick's line. Teste: Wm. Teas, Jno. Dean, Samuel Kinkade. Delivered: Charles Teas, September, 1766."[3]

Adam Dean's Second Wife: Adam Dean (abt.1730-1787) is also attached as the husband of Elizabeth (Edmiston) Dean (abt.1745-abt.1803), who married Adam in May 1784 in Washington, Wood, Virginia,[citation needed] after her first husband, William Edmondson (abt.1734-1780), was killed in the Battle of Kings Mountain.

Captain William Edmondson was under Campbell's command[4] - Col. W. Campbell - from Washington County, Virginia. His Find a Grave memorial has him born 1740 in Cecil County, Maryland, died 7 October 1780 at King's Mountain. However, the text appears to contradict the birth date and location: 1734 in Augusta County. It says that he was "also known as William Edmiston", which brings his wife Elizabeth's maiden name into question. And the memorial is not attached to any other memorials.[5]

There may be some confusion as to which William died at King's Mountain and which married Elizabeth - see for example William Robert Edmiston (1736-1822) born in Cecil County in 1736 (per WikiTree) and died in Washington County, Virginia. His second wife: Elizabeth (Kennedy) Edmiston (1748-1821). His profile calls the Captain William who died a brother-in-law, so his wife would be Elizabeth Edmiston.

Bell Cemetery, Vesta Rd & Gwynn Rd, Lebanon, Wilson County, Tennessee.[2]

Cemetery information - transcription of her tombstone, identifying her as "Wife of James Bell" also says that she was the "daughter of William and Eleanor Tase Dean", but the sourced profile attached 3 March 2022 is for Adam Dean (abt.1730-1787). That profile prior to a merge had a birth year of 1720. There was a William Dean whose will, proved 1773 in Augusta County, Virginia, named Adam Dean as son and executor (he declined and William's widow was executrix). The will also named a daughter Mary, but she could not be this Mary if her tombstone date of birth is correct (1777).
