John was born in St. Louis in 1884 to John L. DePriest and Katie Hessler. He was still young when his father died.[1][2]
By 1933, he was experiencing enough health issues that he was living in home for disabled veterans in California. He is separated and 1/2 brother, James R. Brown is his nearest kin. He was a Catholic. He was described as tall with grey eyes and brown hair. He had served in the US Navy, enlisting in February of 1901 in St. Louis and discharged in May of 1901 at Rhode Island because of disability. He has chronic bronchitis, varicose veins and vision impairment. [3][4]
He died from heart failure in 1948 at the Veteran's Home in Los Angeles. He is buried in the Veterans Administration Cemetery in L. A.[5][6][7]
