Biography

Michael Samuel DeBruhl was born in 1725 in Borken, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. His father, John Johannes DeBruhl, was born in 1695. Mother unknown.

He emigrated to England where he married Margaret Pring (1725-1784) December 15, 1745 at St Katherine Coleman, London, England.[1]Together, they had nine children. Michael, his wife Margaret, son Goddard (1747-1791), and daughter Margaret (1748-1749) immigrated to Halifax, Nova Scotia, arriving in 1749.

In the Miscellaneous records of South Carolina, a record of Michael DeBruhl is found[2]:

"He first came to America with Gen. Cornwallis, on the settling of Nova Scotia, and after remaining there some time, removed to New York with his family, at which place he kept a Silver Smith Shop about the time or a little before the breaking out of the late war. He is properly a Gold Chaser by trade."

He moved to New York about 1760 where he made his living as an as an engraver.

He then moved to New Bern, NC. and died shortly after that, April 4, 1773, at the age of 48, and was buried there. His headstone can be seen in the churchyard of Christ Episcopal Church in downtown New Bern, NC[3]. His son Edward Cornwallis DeBruhl is where my family tree forks.
